HPCSA Registration for Foreign-Qualified Physiotherapists in South Africa

Looking to practise as a physiotherapist in South Africa?

Foreign-qualified physiotherapists must complete the relevant registration process with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) before they can practise professionally.

At BLCSA, we help international healthcare professionals understand the process, prepare their documentation and navigate their registration journey with confidence.

Documents You May Need

Applications considered by the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetics (PPB) generally require:

  • Copies of all relevant degree or diploma certificates
  • Official academic transcripts issued by your educational institution
  • A detailed curriculum in English
  • Official evidence of full-time practical or clinical training
  • Evidence of professional experience, if already practising
  • A SAQA Certificate of Evaluation for your foreign qualification, where applicable
  • A recent Certificate of Status / Good Standing from the appropriate authority
  • A valid identity document or passport as proof of identity and citizenship

Applicants should ensure that all documents meet the latest HPCSA requirements before submission.

PPB Board Examination

Once the Professional Board confirms that you are eligible to sit the PPB Board Examination, you will need to follow the examination instructions provided by the HPCSA.

This may include:

  • Confirmation of your eligibility to sit the examination
  • Proof of payment of the applicable examination fee
  • Any additional documentation requested by the Professional Board

The examination may include theoretical and practical or clinical components. Examination dates, venues and fees are determined by the Professional Board and should be confirmed directly with the HPCSA.

Registration After the Examination

Candidates who successfully complete the required examination components can proceed to the next stage of consideration for HPCSA registration, subject to the Professional Board’s requirements and approval.
